Other Definitions | Signed by governments at the Rio Conference in 1992, the Convention is a legally binding agreement committing 169 Governments to take action to stem the worldwide loss of biological diversity. It seeks to conserve biodiversity, provide for sustainable use, and give fair and equitable sharing of benefits from genetic resources. The GEF is the interim funding mechanism for the Convention and responds to the guidance of its COP.
