This UN-Water programme, with seat in Bonn, was established in 2007 for the International Decade for Action 'Water for Life'. It addresses all water-related issues concerning education, training, and other forms of knowledge transfer and the question of institutional/legal capacity developments towards integrated water resources management (IWRM) and sustainable development. However, the special focus is on capacity building.
The aim of the programme office is to strengthen the activities of the more than two dozen UN organisations und programmes already cooperating within the inter-agency mechanism known as UN-Water, and to coordinate their activities and support them in their efforts to achieve the millennium goals related to water. This is not just a matter of capacity development related to water, but also of education, training and institutional development.
Dr. Reza Ardakanian is the Chair of the office. His experience is linked to the key solution to the water, sanitation and environment challenges. During his long experience, Prof. Ardakanian worked as Founding Director of the UNESCO centre of RCUWM, Founding Chair of the Governing Board of (ICQHS-Yazd), Vice Minister for Water Affairs in Ministry of Energy of Iran, for South West Asia, CIS and Middle East countries, as a developing region, and in Iran as a developing country.
