Official WHO Definition

Other Definitions

Assessments, and in particular global assessments have been undertaken by many organisations and individuals with the past two decades witnessing the advent of multistakeholder and/or multi-lateral global assessments. There are some common characteristics of the scientific analysis components that underpin the outcomes of all assessments. A key point is that an assessment is not a review of the literature. It can be derived from a literature review, but needs to also provide an assessment of the veracity of the information and the uncertainty of the outcomes within the context of the identified questions or issues within a specified authorising environment. (Based on UN-Water: Water Monitoring - Mapping Existing Global Systems & Initiatives (Aug 2006)).
