Official WHO Definition

An attached growth system retains micro-organisms on the surfaces of solids (e.g. a bed of gravel or coarse sand) for the purpose of treating wastewater. As wastewater flows through the surfaces of the solids organic materials are consumed by the micro-organisms (UNEP 2000). See trickling filter.
