The concentration (or level) of a substance characteristic of a particular medium (e.g. soil, water, rock etc.) in an area or region arising from both natural sources and non-natural diffuse sources such as atmospheric deposition (after definition for background concentration soil, ISO 11074-1:1996) (WHO 2001)
