Official WHO Definition

Nutrients in wastewater (nitrogen and phosphorus) can be removed by the use of specific groups of micro-organisms by providing suitable conditions for their growth. Systems that are designed and operated to achieve this purpose are called BNR systems (UNEP 2000).
