Summary

This study was commissioned to provide a mapping of the energy access situation in developing countries with a focus on Least Developed Countries and Sub-Saharan Africa. An extensive search of current publicly available data was conducted via the Internet for all developing countries. The search focused on access to electricity, modern fuels for cooking and heating, and mechanical power as well as fuels and improved stoves used for cooking. Over 450 relevant documents were reviewed.

The primary motivation behind the study is to create a “catch-all” document for the array of energy access data available from developing countries but which has yet to be made available in one publication. The intention is to provide a global picture of the energy access situation in developing countries in an accessible fashion for ease of reference for policy makers and development practitioners as they develop policy and programmatic responses to energy poverty challenges.
