To reduce the value and use of land through erosion, salinization, loss of soil fertility and the like. Prevention and control of land degradation, especially desertification and deforestation, are critical to achieving sustainable development at the national and global

environmental levels. The GEF endeavors to address land degradation as it relates to the focal areas of biodiversity, climate change and international waters. (A Framework of GEF Activities Concerning Land Degradation, and Operational Strategy, paras. 1.21-1.23)
