The stratospheric ozone layer is a protective shield between 15 and 50 kilometers

(9.3 and 31 miles) above the earth’s surface that absorbs most of the ultraviolet radiation that could harm living organisms on earth. The release of human made chemicals, such as Chlorofluorocarbons(CFC's), halons and industrial chemicals is disrupting the ozone layer and depleting the protective ozone.
