One part per billion is one part in one billion by volume (WHO et al. 2003).  A unit of proportion equal to 10-9 (Symons et al. 2000).See ppb

In water, micrograms per litre (ug/L) is frequently used when referring to parts per billion (Symons et al. 2000).
