Official WHO Definition

A general term applied to any plumbing receptacle, device or appliance that can be temporarily or permanently installed. It can be connected to the drinking-water supply or to the drainage system either by an indirect or direct connection (WHO 2006). A plumbing fixture is normally a water using device or a  receptor,  or an appliance used to collect and remove waste matter away through a drainage system, but includes any waterless sanitary fixture or appliances (WHO 2006).
