The porosity of a geological material is the ratio of the volume of the voids to the total volume, expressed as a decimal fraction or percentage (WHO 2006).

Interpretations and Explanations

The volume of water that can be contained in the rock depends on the proportion of openings or pores in a given volume of rock, and this is termed porosity of the rock. Increasing pore space results in higher porosity and greater potential to store water (WHO 2006).
