Lessons Learned (web 2.0 for dev)

  • Only small percentage of tools and approaches used in the dev sector
  • Concept and definition still shaping itself
  • easy to focus on tools and forget the approach
    • web 2.0 is more about social change than about the web-tools
  • Cacophony of voices - is there any response?
    • still chaotic
  • complexity - needs a holistic approach
    • needs YOUR solution
    • "want a blog" --> what kind / topic / for what / ..
  • "quality of shared content"
    • type of content users want to provide may not match old ideas of "appropriate content"


  • Tools and content developed in the North --> how to involve South / N-S dialogue & collaboration?

--> TRUPLE has good functionalities / opportunities


uniwiki (UNICEF)

  • Different Wiki-projects by UNICEF (since beginning 2007)
  • There is a team of some 17 Geeks, web architects, comm managers, etc forming the "UNICEF innovation team" (part of the Youth team), headed by Christopher Fabian (senior comm officer). Reporting directly to the Management/Director's office
    • amongst others South-Eastern WatSan-Wiki
    • using Truple (like Jumla -> Wiki inside)
  • Main objective/challenge: How to connect people without computer or Internet Access to the web-content.
    • --> Done through automated mobile-phone access: people sms-in a query, the machine reseraches and calls back a couple of minutes later reading out the answers.
  • "Knowledge Gardeners"
    • interesting, as we (UNDP/BRC) call them "knowledge farmers"
    • Christopher will send TOR
  • HINT: UNICEF uses Google-docs as white board / GMail as remote-mail-access system / ... (MASH IT UP, BROTHER!)
  • VIEW: Use taxonomy, even on a Wiki, to guide/support users on (a) where to put knowledge or create a new page or (b) expect to find knowledge they look for
  • HEARD: "transforming information into knowledge"

Internet Speech

  • internet over telephone -> voice navigation ("internet search" / "that "one" / ..)
  • reading only relevant stories / highlights -> how to determine what's important?

  • focus on Youth / topics, not the World Bank
